Self-healing As prevention Repair of COncrete Structures

Awarded STSMs

| CALL 1.0

Applicant:  Marta Roig Flores,  Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain

STSM Topic: Evaluation of the durability improvement produced by different self-healing agents by means of sorptivity tests

Host: Abir Al-Tabbaa, University of Cambridge, Cambridge (UK)

Period: 09/01/2017 to 09/04/2017

Work Plan Summary:

The objective of this STSM is to analyze the improvement in durability produced by different self-healing agents. In this STSM, the effectiveness of two mechanisms will be compared with autogenous healing: a self-healing admixture (crystalline admixture) and a self-healing repair mortar with microcapsules. The study will include different healing exposures to evaluate potential applications. The improvement in durability will be evaluated mainly by means of sorptivity tests. These tests will be complemented with the characterization of the healing byproducts, to increase the understanding of the process. The size of the crack widths that will be analyzed will be around 0.2-0.3 mm, which are acceptable cracks for the service state.
The two involved institutions have expertise in different techniques, allowing a complementary collaboration with a clear transfer of knowledge. This STSM will run for 3 months. The tasks will include preparation of the procedures, preliminary tests to adapt the dosage, casting, pre-cracking and testing cracked and healed specimens, and analyzing the results.
